If you are married to a Costa Rican citizen, you are eligible for temporary residence through marriage.
- The temporary residency under the Marriage Category is valid for one year.
- It can be renewed for additional one-year periods.
- After three years of holding temporary residency, you will become eligible for permanent residency.
Main Requirement for the Marriage Category
Under current immigration regulations, foreign nationals who are married to a Costa Rican citizen are eligible for temporary residence. The marriage must be registered with the Civil Registry (Registro Civil) in order to be valid for residency purposes.

The application process for temporary residency through marriage to a Costa Rican takes between 12 and 15 months, depending on the processing time of the Costa Rica Immigration department (DGME), which takes approximately 9 months to analyze the application.
